Sauti
October 23-26, 2007
Sauti (meaning "voices" in the Swahili language) is the title of a dance production that will present African Contemporary dance works of two choreographers: Michele Moss from Calgary and Casimiro Nhussi from Winnipeg.
This will be a full evening shared between the two choreographers. Each choreographer will develop a 35-minute dance piece related to Sauti (or voices); those of nature and those that rise from within you, both of which need to be heard and expressed.
The total duration of this new work will be 70 minutes.

Symbiosis
March 21 and 22, 2008
Our reactions and interactions with our neighbours go a long way towards telling us who we are. Cultures act as a mirror for each other, and what we see reflected in them can tell us a great deal about ourselves. So, what happens when peoples rub shoulders, overhear each other singing or stumble into someone else's street party? When we join with those around us something new is born, not quite the old ways and not quite the new ways, but something hybrid. NAfro Dance's Symbiosis - which opens Fri., Mar. 21st at 2pm and 8pm and again on Sat., Mar.22nd at 8pm - is a moving, living, hopeful manifestation of that idea. The show is about symbiosis, how the crossing and cojoining of cultures creates something new. It is the mix of the street and not the boardroom. We are peoples, varied and glorious. We can dance no matter what the powers say, we can sing in jail and we can speak to each other without concern. Fear is the thing that keeps us apart, joy is the binding that keeps us together. And the tie that binds in Nafro's Symbiosis is choreographer Casimiro Nhussi.

Choreographer's inspiration:
"In most African traditions, it is believed that there is life after death. It is believed that the ancestors are still present and are guiding us everyday. From time to time, we take a moment to pay tribute to them, to communicate with them, to ask questions and to ask for help. That moment of communication, in the Makonde language, is called Kulipudya - Pudya in singular form. As an African man, a Makonde, I believe that we all need a moment to find our own inner spirit, a moment to communicate with our souls, a moment to revaluate our lives, and refill it for tomorrow. PUDYA is a moment of self evaluation. PUDYA was inspired by the Makonde people's traditional ceremony of communicating with their ancestors. At this ceremony, they chant and dance, invoking the spirit of their ancestors to ask for help and good guidance in their lives." - Casimiro Nhussi -
